The child is fine

The sentence 'The child is fine' comes to mind unexpectedly, like a mantra. She needs it so much at this moment, and its effect is so calming that it nearly makes her jump. She looks around, as if searching for someone who could have said it, although she knows full well that she only heard it in her head. The child is fine. She rejects the urge to repeat it out loud, although she suspects that for the next few hours there will hardly be room in her mind for any other words. She would say them to the person in the next seat, to the flight attendant, to anyone who looked at or spoke to her. She takes a deep breath. The child is fine. Four words.
